Easy Homemade Green Bean Casserole Recipe

One of our favorite holiday dishes is this simple Green Bean Casserole recipe. This Green Bean Casserole is the finest you'll ever have because of how full of flavor and texture it is. Try this delicious side dish for Thanksgiving or whenever you want to impress your guests with something special.


  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 medium onions
  • 2 tbsp panko bread crumbs
  • 1 pound fresh green beans
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp plus 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp freshly ground nutmeg
  • 12 ounces mushrooms
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 cup half-and-half



The oven has to be heated to 475 degrees F.


Toss the onions with the flour, panko, and salt in a large basin. The onions should be spread in a single layer on a baking sheet with nonstick spray.


Put the dish in the center of the oven and bake for 30 minutes or until the top is golden. The onions should be tossed two or three times during cooking. Take the finished product out of the oven and put it in a convenient location. Reduce the heat to 400 degrees F in the oven.


Get the beans ready while the onions are cooking. Bring 1 gallon of water and 2 teaspoons of salt to a boil in a saucepan with 8 quarts.


After 5 minutes, toss in the beans and blanch them. Drain the beans in a strainer to halt the cooking process and immediately submerge them in a big bowl of cold water. Drain and put away.


A cast-iron skillet at least 12 inches in diameter should melt the butter over medium heat. Toss in the mushrooms, 1 teaspoon of salt, and a few grinds of black pepper, and simmer, turning periodically, for about 4 to 5 minutes or until the mushrooms release some of their liquid.


After 1–2 minutes, stir in the garlic and nutmeg and cook. Add the flour and whisk it in to make a smooth paste. Prepare for 1 minute.


Cook the broth for a minute on low heat. Put the half-and-half in and turn the heat down to low. Keep cooking and stirring every few minutes for about 6 to 8 minutes or until the liquid has thickened.


Take it off the fire and mix in all the green beans and a quarter of the onions. Sprinkle the last of the onions over the top. Put in the oven and bake for about 15 minutes until bubbling. Take out and serve right away.


  • If you want the beans to be crunchy, boil them for about three minutes, but if you want them to be softer, let them simmer for a few more minutes.
  • Serve hot, and if you'd like, garnish with some fresh chopped parsley.
